Canada divides all nurses into Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs). Both categories have subcategories regulated by provincial authorities, like emergency assignment and non-practicing nurses. For instance, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the regulating and governing authority for nursing in Ontario.

Get a Bachelor’s Degree
Except in Quebec, it’s a general rule for aspiring nurses in all provinces to have post-secondary education, otherwise known as a bachelor’s in the relevant profession.
RNs with a post-secondary background are generally regarded as following safety procedures and cost-effective strategies, providing quality care, and complying with all ethical considerations.
Therefore, you must have at least a bachelor’s degree to qualify for a job as a Canadian RN.
Apply with the Regulating Authority
The regulating authority for every province oversees everything related to the nursing profession, including nursing candidates applying for the NCLEX exam. You can only apply and qualify for the exam directly with the regulating authority.
For instance, aspiring nurses in Ontario can only apply with the CNO, who will perform a review and allow them to take the exam after they deem them eligible for the registration exam.
Pass the Jurisprudence Exam
Before becoming an RN, every nursing student must pass a jurisprudence exam, which the CNO also regulates. The test assesses the non-medical side of things related to the nursing profession, particularly:
- The general rules and laws.
- The nursing by-laws of the provincial regulator.
- Standard practices and guidelines.
Other Requirements
You’ll be an RN once you receive your General Class certificate from the CNO. To qualify for this certificate, you must have the following:
- Proof that you’ve completed the relevant nursing program.
- Recent proof showing safe nursing practices.
- Exam results
- Speak and write fluent English.
- Meet the eligibility criteria for registration.
- Proof of Canadian citizenship or a permit to practice nursing in Canada.
