3 Things International Nurses Should Keep in Mind During NCLEX Prep

Nursing students work extremely hard to complete their education while proving their competency in clinical and classroom settings. This huge accomplishment brings them on the verge of starting their nursing career. However, they face one final hurdle, known as the NCLEX-RN exam.

Passing the exam is a requirement to becoming a registered nurse in Canada. This computer-based, standardized test can make nurses feel extremely stressed about passing. After extensive research, advice from fellow students and mentors, and heavy preparation, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed.

Here are some things that international nurses should keep in mind while preparing for the NCLEX-RN:

The exam format

The NCLEX-RN exam is based on a computerized adaptive testing format. While the candidate is giving the exam, an algorithm determines new questions based on the performance of previous answers. They have a wide variety of comprehensive questions in their test banks, consisting of many different topics.

There is a max-min limit of 75-265 questions, and candidates pass once they answer enough questions correctly to stay above the passing line. The level of difficulty increases with each correct answer, testing the candidate’s maximum knowledge.

Have a clear studying style

Everyone has their own unique style of studying, and you should be aware of what works best for you when you’re preparing for the NCLEX exam. Whether you understand concepts better with the inclusion of visual data, group discussions, or by listening to lectures, there’s a lot of different things that you can try.

Discussion and video portals tend to help students gather and understand concepts in a better way. They can also discuss things with each other to clear up any misunderstandings.

Stress management

Don’t let your stress get to you. You’ve made it so far already; all you need to do is pass this final exam. Even if you aren’t stressed about the exam yourself, you might end up absorbing your peers’ nervousness and get anxious.

Maintain a healthy balance and get proper sleep and exercise in the months leading up to the exam. Don’t make studying the sole purpose of your life!
